'Nein' is German for 'no'. ----------------------------------------------------- "The Seven Chairs" "The fifth one ended up in France, the sixth in Spain, and the seventh here in Germany" He finished. I stood in attention in a line with other men in the same uniform. The time was World War II. I know my place here, It was easy for even me to tell that this prestigious position of being a Nazi was a terrible thing, but it wasn't my choice. Our leader, 'our oh-so-kind-and-generous' Nazi leader, circled a chair that was rumored to be unbreakable and the perfect accessory for execution. He grabbed a Jewish woman and harshly threw her into the chair. I cringed at the fear in her face. 'All Jews are bad.' I reminded myself, 'She's…It's suppose to die so it can be forgiven' I thought. "Ready" nein… "Aim" nein… "Fire!" nein! Despite my mental objection, I, like the other elite soldiers, shot the religious women. I wasn't aloud to turn away or feel bad or show weakness. Death was common. Death wasn't the end. It was the escape. The man I followed called me out of the line and made me lift the dead, bloody, and bullet filled body out of the chair, as promised bullets didn't go through the chair, they stopped and now sat motionless in the seat. No dents, no holes. My leaders smile grew and he cheered. The other soldiers cheered too. I sat silently with a dead nun in my arms. It was days later and we still used the chair. We had tied it to the ceiling of the Jewish synagogue and any Jew that came for a safe haven was killed. It was harsh and cruel but I had no choice. I was watched closely and forced to kill innocent and defenseless people because they were handicapped, or weren't the right religion. The worst part was when they were gay. If they were gay like I was. Each gay man I killed reminded me of my love for Gilbert. I stood with our leader watching a Rabi hang from that damned Chair. He fired his gun, and the rope snapped. I made the mistake to look away. I was punished immediately. |
